Note: I made this video quite quickly when I heard this song. I did a stupid mistake by writing "distorded" instead of "distorted". Sorry about that, enjoy the song!

For people who keep saying "Elliott's songs were about personal experiences//stories", it's not all that true. I'm sure lots of his songs had to do with something in his life, but he clearly states: “I think the suggestion that all my songs are personal is insulting because that assumes that I have a bunch of issues that I feel the need to unload on strangers. That is not the case. It also assumes that I just talk about myself the whole time which, again, is not true.”SO THERE YA GO. This song rules. Every song of his is a masterpiece.

I'm floating in a black balloonO.D. on Easter afternoonMy mama told me "Baby stay cleanThere's no in-between"And all you ladies and you gentlemenBetween is all you've ever seen or beenFit poorly and arrange the sightDoll it up in virgin whiteYou disappoint me, you people raking in on the worldThe devil's script sells you the heart of a blackbirdShine on me baby, 'cause it's raining in my heartSun's rising on a chopping glareRain dropping acid bought up in the airA distorted reality's now a necessity to be freeIt's so disappointingFirst I put it all down to luckGod knows why my country don't give a fuckFuckShine on me baby, 'cause it's raining in my heartShine on me baby, 'cause it's raining in my heart

Say what you want...to me Elliott is like Allen Ginsberg (esp. poem 'America')...Love them both.

I'm really glad I googled my own name, I've never heard this man's music before today. So far this song is my favorite out of what I got the chance to listen to.

These sounds are pure psychic agony, anyone in seething pain or on the edge can easily identify and slip into blackness.

+Holly Perrett I think your summary is dandy, but saying that absurdism is a philosophy "that basically talks about different ways of confronting an absurd world" clearly isn't meant to sum up the whole of absurdism here. It's meant to refer to a specific trait and tenant, in basic terms, that is referred to in the song and comment. In other words, saying (for example only, I have no idea if this is actually true haha) "Actionism was a 'movement' that basically contained multiple artists who all reacted to their situation in a similar way, but never existed as a group" is using "that basically" to refer to a specific quality of the movement in a simple way, not to summarize the whole movement.Although "in a simple way" is an accepted definition of "basically," I can see how it could lead to confusion, since many people reflexively assume it's meant to be synonymous with "fundamentally;" Rynn could've been more explicit to remove any ambiguity.

This song expresses more than a little drug use! In this society (American) and most others, A DISTORTED REALITY IS NOW A NECESSITY TO BE FREE!!!

This song is deeper than addiction, at least from my prospective. I think Elliott was saying a distorted reality is now a necessity to be free as people within current civilization. Seeing how our realty is severely distorted wouldn't you agree?

Hey Seth I really like your posts and I was thirty two when I started getting my life together, not because I wanted to or had a desire to stop doing what I was doing. But I had always been able to hold a job and I told myself as long as you have a job you can't be that bad.Well my fifth or sixth arrest almost cost me my job and I was terrified. That was my last defense in claiming I didn't have a drug or alcohol problem. They said I either go to rehab and complete it or just turn in my credentials on the spot. Long story short from following direction,One day at a time I have been clean and sober for 28 years. My first year sober was hell. But things get better. And I just didn't like getting high, heroin my drug of choice,I loved loved it. But I had gotten to the point where I really was sick and tired of being sick and tired.Don't mean to preach just sharing what happened to me. Music is one of my greatest passions and I really love Elliot Smith. What a terrific artist.Like Phil Ochs he died way to soon. Miss you Elliot.
