Great jazz composition written by Puerto Rican musician and composer Juan Tizol from Vega Baja, Puerto Ririco. He also wrote Caravan. His interpretation with the trombone, his vibrato was unique.

I always thought it was a new song when I first heard it in the early 50's. It was an instrumental all the way. Was it Tito Puente who made a hit with it? Can't recall for sure; then Sarah Vaughn made quite a hit with it - Perdido had a lot a legs. Can't remember seeing this video before, but the sax player was totally out of it and I first thought he may have died - comments are saying he had Narcoplexy and Drugs issues. Only one Commenter even mentioned the Drummer - wow, it was fantastic. Sam Wayward or what, I didn't really hear the last name exactly, please inform me so I can research him.Great video, thanks Philip Kolb for posting this treasure. Oh, woulda been excellent if you posted the names of the Clarinetist, Saxist, and Drummer. Thanks.

I find it crazy and funny how Paul didn't wake up when the band was playing extremely loud but then he wakes up after a small nudge on the arm from Jimmy ._. Can someone explain please ?

Sam Woodyard was one of the most under rated musicians in the history of planet Earth.

I believe he had Narcolepsy on top of just being a typical jazz musician in the 50's and 60's.

With Paul "unavailable", Duke had to eliminate the hip two-tenor introduction and do a quick piano chorus leading into the chart.

Say what you want about Paul Gonsalves. Yes he had substance issues. But what he did for Duke Ellington st the NJF in '56 cemented his bond with Duke. Ellington apparently didn't like the fact that Paul embarrassed him and the band on these occasions. However,Duke felt so much gratitude to Gonsalves for what amounted to resurrection for Ellington's band and career..he could not find it in his heart..no matter the shame on his name...to kick Paul Gonsalves out of the band. Ellington stayed loyal.
