This song sounded very familiar, but to me it sounded like a soul/r&b tune. So when I read that Pointer Sisters had made a version I thought "ah, that's it". But no, it's the Randy Crawford version I'm familiar with. The song writers who didn't manage to "sell" it to Michael Jackson were musician/actress Brie Howard (ex-wife of James Newton Howard, ex-mother-in-law of Nikki Sixx!), Glen Ballard (became very successful producer, for Alanis etc.) ) and Davey Faragher (nowadays Costello's bassist)

From Discogs info about Pointer Sister's album Break Out (1983): "...original version of the album included the song "Nightline" (originally intended for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" LP and then released in early 1983 by Ellen Foley and in spring 1983 by Randy Crawford) which would eventually be replaced by a remixed version of "I'm So Excited" (actually an edit of a previous 12" remix) on the second version that would come out in 1984."

What a gas, NIGHTLINE , Ellen's dance song from 1983. The Pointer Sisters did it just after her too. Both versions are good.
