It's to do with the image of Great Britain being an island :) The blue silk screening on the crowd representing the sea and the green and pleasant land in the centre :)

Best olympics ever. Not flashy or over the top. They were about the athletes and the great city of London. Well done, Britain!

I was one of the footballers that are directly behind this orchestra. We were really worried about kicking a ball at these people! haha.....

I am so proud to have been selected to arrange this music so that 80 young people, many of them absolute beginners, could play it in the ceremony.

The secret melody to Elgar's Enigma Variations is 'Ein feste Burg' (A Mighty Fortress) by Martin Luther. A music cipher embedded in the Enigma Theme confirms this discovery as well as the identity of the hidden friend of Variation XIII. 'Ein feste Burg' is the only melodic theme that has been shown to play 'through and over' the set of Variations as Elgar required in the original 1899 program note.
