He actually denied that in some interviews: he had the occasion, but he declined because he couldn't afford it. For example, he talks about that in the BBC Radio 4 programme "Desert Island Discs" on 26 feb. 1995. The episode can be downloaded from the BBC site. Easiest way find it: type Desert Island Discs in the BBC main page search bar; in the results page the third entry should be "Castaway Archive & Podcasts": click it and find the whole programme archive. :)
