I feel like, when Bob Dylan gave this song to Billy Joel, he expected something different than what he got. Billy Joel was at a strange period in his career, and Bob Dylan wanted lush, romantic piano Billy Joel and didn't get it. That's probably why he ended up putting out his own version shortly after. But I think Bob Dylan knew the song wasn't meant for him. He wrote it in 1997, and I doubt he wrote it about any woman in particular, as much as he wrote it to encapsulate the whole feeling that occurs when you want so bad for someone to feel some other way than they do. But it needed to be sung by someone who was feeling it as they were singing it. Ed's version isn't heartbreaking, but it's definitely the closest so far.

I feel he's a man that would never take anything for granted, he's finds joy in the most simplest things. I've noticed in his more smaller, more casual gigs where it's just him and the guitar, he seems to put more into it then when he's in a tux on a stage with an entire band behind him. Nevertheless, he's wonderful in both venues :)
