How do you sync both hands so well? When I speed it up all goes to shit.

@RobChappers I find the introsolo of Fade To Black from Metallica a good excersise too. What do you think about that?

there is an economy picking technique known as the 1 3 1 3 method. i would really like to know how to make these kinds of patterns with scales so i can improv with this technique. if you could explain to me just how to make this sweep pattern i would really love it!

@RobChappers Since you made the change to economy picking, did you change completely your style, or is alternative picking still a viable option in some licks? I'm asking this because I'm thinking about trying to learn economy picking and, at the same time, I'm learning a John Petrucci lick that he obviously plays using alternative picking. In a case like this, would you learn it with economy picking, changing your entire repertoire to this technique?

See, my problem isn't the sweep to the note on the adjacent string, but the alternate pick after that. For instance, say I'm playing a 3 note minor phrase like the one in your second exercise, and the picking pattern is D, U, D, D, U, D, D etc. It's that second up stroke that I have difficulty nailing... Any suggestions??

Monkey Lord, Thanks for the great lesson. i've heard of economic picking, but never tried it. I am happy and use to using alternate picking, but i'll master this fine technique just to have it in my tool belt lol. And to also go another route here and there instead of using alternate picking so much. Thanks again, ol' great Monkey Lord.

@RobChappers Is Economy Picking the Same as Hybrid Picking? I thought that was Hybrid Picking. If not can you tell me the difference, because I've only been playing for a few months, and I learned that, that technique was hybrid picking.

Never knew what economy picking was until now... It always came natural because I wanted to find a way to play faster and had trouble playing 3 notes per string licks. I always thought economy picking meant do as little picking to play... then I learned that was legato.

economy picking comes naturally for me , but what would you recommend... to stay with economy or to try to get used to alternate picking too...?

Not only are you an musical inspiration but you crack me up. I used to teach as well, your advise is spot on. Play it slow until it hurts, then try speeding it up. Many young players speed up automatically. I found using a metronome useful and will drive your parents or roomates nuts. :D
