Dwight Yoakam's song about the 3 R's of Kentucky schools. They learned readin' rightin' and roads to the north that led to luxuries a coal miner can't afford.

This song inspired me. Last summer I took a road trip from Atlanta to Pittsburgh, but instead of driving I-85, I-77, U.S. 19 and I-79 like I had before, I took U.S. 23, a.k.a. the "Hillbilly Highway," deep into the Appalachians.I drove every mile of it in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, and into the coalfields of eastern Kentucky. I ate dinner at a Steak 'N' Shake in Pikeville right where U.S. 119 intersected, but unfortunately it was dark by the time I was done, so I didn't see much as I drove north past Prestonsburg and Paintsville. I did see a sign commemorating Dwight Yoakam, though.I ended up driving U.S. 23 all the way north to I-64 in Catlettsburg, and I remember seeing a giant oil refinery just off the highway right before crossing the Big Sandy River into West Virginia. From there I drove I-64 east past Huntington to Charleston, and I-79 north to Pittsburgh. Come to think of it, I drove the entire length of I-79 in West Virginia. On the way back from Pittsburgh, I took a different route that was even more circuitous. I drove I-79 south to Charleston; I-64 east/I-77 south to Beckley; I-64 east to Lexington, VA; I-81 south to Bristol, TN; I-26 (south)east to Spartanburg, SC; and I-85 back home to Atlanta.

This area is the best in the world! All people should grow up here, be a lot less crime. Its a shame that the Obama administration is destroying our way of life. Dwight says it best, reading writing Route 23! Wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

You don't understand our way of living here, unless you have lived here yourself! We have our own way of life here in eastern ky.

I am from and I live in the same place he is from! Everything in this song is true. They are a lot of talented people come from here in eastern Ky. Everything in this song is so true. I am a coal miners daughter, and right now coal jobs are gone. People are moving once again, to have a life some where better than here..=)

I don't think Dwight would have made it if not for Pete Anderson's contributions of stellar guitar playing and producing skills. It's a shame DY just walked away from him over 10 years ago and Pete has handled it so gracefully in interviews. He never says anything bad about DY and that they have not spoken since they last worked together. Not trying to put DY down. I met him last Christmas at the show in Ventura, Ca. Great guy. But there's something to be said about loyalty to the one's who ate .39 cent Top Ramen noodle soup for years while trying to make it as a team. Johnny Cash would have never done that to Luther and Buck would not to Don Rich. There's the difference.

Pennington Gap and Big Stone Gap. Dwight is the real deal down home country singer, songwriter and performer. He has helped to save pure country music.
