Dusty Springfield is a phenomenon - the power and passion of her singing is amazing and unique. I would have loved to have heard her take on Alfie!

Burt did not write "house is not a home". His partner, Hal David, did. He only wrote the music. Mr. David wrote the brilliant lyrics that give the song ALL of its meaning.

Such a beautiful version - and, interestingly, remakes, covers are almost always inferior, this version IS the definitive version - and bizarrely, it's YET to be officially released (this video of the performance is the ONLY place - and, yes, I DO know there's other versions of the video on YouTube).

Luther's version has always been my favorite ....until I saw this ...Dusty's version is perfection ....she nailed it.

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice she had and she can really sing this song. There are many versions to this song, each with their own mark. Luther stands out to me and also Sarah Vaughan. RIP Dusty

Number one, this was a one timething with Burt signing. He had a TERRIBLE voice lolAs far as Luther, he did a good job- I like his version. But her version, to me, was the best. Also, when I stopped and listened to Luther singing "Waiting at the top of the stair" meant some hairy muscled up man waiting for him, and the reunion that would follow, it took some of the romanticism out of it for me :)

The song and songwriter were great, the singer was great. Immortal pop entertainers. Period. End of story. Dusty had her moments!

A further note on this site. Some of the comments argue for Burt's version. Admittedly Burt has an "Interesting " vocal, but he is hardly a Great singer, can you imagine a whole concert sung in that strained muffle? I think there is a tendency to think he wrote the lyrics as well as the music, so that he was expressing hit own emotions, whereas in fact the lyrics were written by Hal David as were many of the songs associated with Burt Bacharach. Neither the Brook Benton not Dionne Warwick versions were big hits, but I read the Luther Vandross version brought Dionne to tears. Good wishes to all of them, and Bless the Dearly Loved Dusty, who just happens to be my favorite.

All this debate: bottom line, it is a GREAT song, and worth hearing. I loved this version, the original with Warwick, and Luther and Jacob on American Idol; in fact I thought his was the "song of the year" that season. Why not just love any of em you want

Luther sounds better than both of them together. Not taking anything form the oldie but goodies. But Luther Vandros put way out of reach even for the dead to catch.
