For some reason I interpret this song as when you have a really close friend that changes, or gets into a bad lifestyle and becomes distant, and you patiently wait for them hoping they "come back". I know it's a religious song and the lyrics are literally about father/son, but as a young person/nonbeliever I connect to it way differently.

Ive always loved this song but thought it was about a regular father/son relationship. Then the other night I watched a video of him performing this live and he said its about the Prodigal Son; I instantly got chills. How could I have gone so long and not made the connection? As he sang the song, I started to cry. It really hit home. What a beautiful beautiful song. So meaningful to where I am at in my life right now. I dont think I can ever listen to this again without tearing up a little.
