This song is about Simon Lebon's friendship with Michael Hutchence of INXS. The song appears on the band's album Medazzaland, which was released in the US, but nowhere else thanks to their goofed up contracts at the time. Medazzaland was released on October 14, 1997. Michael Hutchence died on on November 22, 1997. Duran Duran was on tour at the time; the night of Michael's death they performed an abbreviated, mournful show in Cleveland, Ohio. Numerous songs from the regular set list were cut out (including "So Long Suicide" from Medazzaland) and the entire performance was dedicated to Michael's memory.In an interview with Q magazine (February 2008) vocalist Simon LeBon said: "'Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For' was about Michael being a naughty boy in the South of France and London when he was livingwith Paula (Yates). He did like his substances. I couldn't keep up withhim. No way. We all know that Michael liked drugs."

I very much agree with w/ Cormael Lia on this matter about Michael his family did not like like Paula and Michael up close personal friends/co workers she played on Michael's emotions and yanked his strings the baby was used as a whipping post she knew what she doing we all could see that or tell that by listening to her talk she was a cooky eccentric woman everyone knows the Europeans sexualities England and Aussies do not mix

the fact of the matter is that Simon Le Bon was a friend of Bob and Paula, Simon guided Paula down the aisle even, so the fact that Simon says that Michael has a lot to answer for is for something completely differemt, and to be honest Michael wasn't responsible for the Geldof marriage Paula was, she decided to act the way she did .... Michael hasn't anything to answer for in my humble opinion ♥

No...he died of suicide..all the pressures in his life plus alcohol and drugs..The AEA theory was Paula Yates bullshit because she couldn't face the fact that she was mostly to blame for his problems.I have nothing but love for Michael Hutchence.I wish he were still here,The guy was simply amazing but the whole accidental hanging is b.s.
