From the HI-FI Ellington Uptown album. This is a variation of a classic with Betty Roche Doing a great job of scat vocals. After Betty the piece morphs back into classic Ellington with Paul Gansalves taking center stage with what can only be described as an awesome example of sax mastery which makes me hold my breath waiting for that last soaring note every time I hear it.

For me, this is the definitive version of Take the A Train. Betty Roche is fabulous--I love the way the band echoes some of her scat singing. And of course Paul Gonsalves builds a beautiful melodic line to the end. If you listen to it enough times you can sing the melodies along with both of them.

I don't have Uptown, but I have the greatest hits album on vinyl and this track is on it. Sounds absolutely beautiful when blasted :)

his was my first vynil of Duke, some time ago when I was about18 years old.... I´ve listening many music after that... I´m from Brazil and obvsly I like Tom Jobim, but like Opera and other kind of music too... but nobody can transit trougth popular to classic music like Ellington... from Harlem to space... that´s "the one"... and his orchestra was the best reunion of suberb musicians... I´ve never heard better......
