Dropkick Murphys - The Green Fields of France (Eric Bogle cover)

Lyrics:

Oh how do you do, young Willy McBride

Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside

And rest for a while in the warm summer sun

I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done

And I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen

When you joined the great falling in 1916

Well I hope you died quick

And I hope you died clean

Or Willy McBride, was is it slow and obscene

Did they beat the drums slowly

Did they play the fife lowly

Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down

Did the band play the last post and chorus

Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind

In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined

And though you died back in 1916

To that loyal heart you're forever nineteen

Or are you a stranger without even a name

Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane

In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained

And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame

Did they beat the drums slowly

Did they play the fife lowly

Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down

Did the band play the last post and chorus

Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The sun shining down on these green fields of France

The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance

The trenches have vanished long under the plow

No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now

But here in this graveyard that's still no mans land

The countless white crosses in mute witness stand

To man's blind indifference to his fellow man

And a whole generation were butchered and damned

Did they beat the drums slowly

Did they play the fife lowly

Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down

Did the band play the last post and chorus

Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And I can't help but wonder oh Willy McBride

Do all those who lie here know why they died

Did you really believe them when they told you the cause

Did you really believe that this war would end wars

Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame

The killing and dying it was all done in vain

Oh Willy McBride it all happened again

And again, and again, and again, and again

Did they beat the drums slowly

Did they play the fife lowly

Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down

Did the band play the last post and chorus

Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

World War II is over. War Turks won and Anzac Cove. Peace is a State established in Çanakkale/TURKEY. He lost the French and the British fascists. Ireland is going to win. Long live the fully independent Ireland....IRISH AND TURKISH BROTHERS

"and again, and again, and again and again", very nice song which defineteley brings the senseless of killing and war to a clear point.

Respectfully submitted; The song was actually called "No Man's Land". It is commonly called "The Green Fields of France" or "Willy McBride".

A song every person should listen to.. and understand.. today. Joss Stone can go to hell for leaving out the key verses in her abomination of this masterpiece.

Dedicated to those who have served, currently serve, and will serve, but most importantly, to those who served and made the greatest sacrifice of all. It's an honor to simply dedicate this to you all. I know a 91 year old man who, at the ages of 19 and 20, was at D-Day, the Siege of Berlin, and the Battle of the Bulge, and he's an absolutely incredible person, as are all the other veterans and service people. Thank you infinitely. Guaranteed that at least one part of this song will make you cry. Happy Memorial Day, everyone."Green Fields of France" - as covered by Dropkick MurphysOh how do you do, young Willy McBride?Do you mind if I sit here down by your gravesideAnd rest for a while in the warm summer sun?I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done. And I see by your gravestone you were only nineteenWhen you joined the great fallen in 1916.Well, I hope you died quickAnd I hope you died clean;Or, Willy McBride, was is it slow and obscene?Did they beat the drums slowly?Did they play the fife lowly?Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?Did the band play the last post and chorus?Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind? In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined? And though you died back in 1916,To that loyal heart you're forever nineteen.Or are you a stranger without even a name,Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane?In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained,And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?Did they beat the drums slowly?Did they play the fife lowly?Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?Did the band play the last post and chorus?Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? The sun shining down on these green fields of France; The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance. The trenches have vanished long under the plow.No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now.But here in this graveyard that's still no mans land,The countless white crosses in mute witness standTo man's blind indifference to his fellow man,And a whole generation were butchered and damned.Did they beat the drums slowly?Did they play the fife lowly?Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?Did the band play the last post and chorus?Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? And I can't help but wonder, oh Willy McBride,Do all those who lie here know why they died?Did you really believe them when they told you the cause?Did you really believe that this war would end wars?Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame,The killing and dying, it was all done in vain.Oh, Willy McBride, it all happened againAnd again, and again, and again, and again.Did they beat the drums slowly?Did they play the fife lowly?Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?Did the band play the last post and chorus?Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest?

mankind is a mindless beast.he thinks killing is the answer to make a better world.real human beings know better.they know a different way.but it dos'nt make mankind rich and powerful. war is a game for the rich to play, your the pawn.this is the way of rich and powerful.they have nothing better to do,their minds a warped from to much power

The Great War is one of my favorite wars (as odd as that sounds) because unlike the second world war there is no clear bad guy. It's just two sides, fighting and dying for, what seems to us a stupid reason.

Willie should have joined his own people instead of dying for the British.

For the man at the front line fighting for his family or king and country there is only one thought and that is of survival. Wars are created by governments and fought by the common man.. Suffering and death on both sides is a tragedy, it does not matter what side you are on. Fight and die on the front line or face a death of a so called coward at the hands of you own leaders and this happened on both sides.
