Song from the album Decoration Day

Lyrics:

You want to grow up to paint houses like me, a trailer in my yard till you're 23

You want to be old after 42 years, keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

Well, I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green.

Me and your Mama made you in the back and I sold it to buy her a ring.

And I learned not to say much of nothing and I figured you already know

but in case you dont or maybe forgot, Ill lay it out real nice and slow

Dont call what your wearing an outfit. Dont ever say your car is broke.

Dont worry about losing your accent, a Southern Man tells better jokes.

Have fun but stay clear of the needle. Call home on your sisters birthday.

Dont tell them youre bigger than Jesus, dont give it away.

Six months in a St. Florian foundry, they call it Industrial Park.

Then hospital maintenance and Tech School just to memorize Frigidaire parts.

But I got to missing your Mama and I got to missing you too.

So I went back to painting for my old man and I guess thats what Ill always do

So dont try to change who you are boy, and dont try to be who you aint.

And dont let me catch you in Kendale with a bucket of wealthy-mans paint.

Dont call what your wearing an outfit. Dont ever say your car is broke.

Dont sing with a fake British accent. Dont act like your familys a joke.

Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sisters birthday.

Dont tell them youre bigger than Jesus, Dont give it away.

Dont give it away.

My favorite, also, of their many great songs although it's not Patterson Hood, it's like great Skynyrd. The first seven song sequence on DD is hard to beat. Old 97s deserve some props, too.Fight Songs & Satellite Rides.

Same here. The old man swam through shit and busted his ass his whole life because he wanted me and my brothers to have it easier. We had a conversation not at all unlike this one when I left for college. The line about not letting him catch him with a bucket of wealthy's paint makes me tear up a little every time I listen to it.

This song reminds me so much of my dad, it already makes me a little misty. One day he will be gone and I know this song is going to make me weep.

I can't explain how much I love this song. No matter where I go in life, I will always call Mississippi my home! I love the people, the culture, the food, and the land itself. It's beautiful and I'm proud to be a southerner.

Loving this in the UK. Only spent a brief time in the South whilst driving from pan-handle Florida to New Orleans but it certainly has character! The Jason Isbell live version of this on KEXP's channel is incredible btw!

I know this song because I heard a dear friend play it back in February. He died this week. This song will always make me smile and think of him.
