One thing I love about James in his post accident years (especially last two tours) is that he's no longer forcing those high notes but paying attention to melody (for example alternating vocal melody in Surrounded or Bridges in the Sky live). While his voice was ridiculously high and powerful he was usually just hitting those instead of actually singing. It's common singers don't look after their voices before almost losing them. Fortunately, he's really talented and have more good characteristics than just range.

James LaBrie was one of the best metal singers in the first half of the 90s before he ignored the doctors advise to cancel the Japan Awake tour 1995 after his food poisoning. Since then his voice, especially his voice range, was damaged forever. But I saw DT in summer 2014 and his voice is much better now than for example from 2002-2012, he trained a lot and he nailed a lot of the songs they played.

You dont have a clue about vocal technique, hes mixing it together. Most of it is a mix that sound like chest voice, he sing in special vowels to keep the vocal tract make it sound heavier on the higher notes.

How can you difference between chest and head voice in a video? In the Take the Time part I didn't notice any difference.

Just my opinion, but i prefer Charlie's voice for the WDADU songs. Just seems to go along with the music more, like James's voice goes better along with, say, "Metropolis", or "Take the Time"
