Well, of course it is. But I think that Metallica, back in the day (not anymore, of course), were better at writing classic, catchy songs, while Dream Theater has a better handle on actually playing their damn instruments. Nothing wrong with either approach.

And plus people bitching about "a shitty original solo". Guitar techniques like petrucci's werent really known of back then so yeah simple stuff but still amazing. People need to get through their heads that without 'tallica, most metal bands today would not exist. Probably not even DT.

Metallica have simple time signatures compared to DT obviously, but people are forgetting that Metallica aren't a out and out progressive band. They were thrash, and thrash is pretty simple stuff.

million riffs in the 20 minute song are not a road to success...DT is maybe the most talented metal band out there but they are often boring :)

I think that your argument is vague... Usually, complicated music is better, even if it takes more time to understand it. They always have a deeper meaning, and it usually is really nice to "discover" what this meaning is.

yea? please listen to the big4 in sofia 2010 (eg. hit the lights, master). or the late concert headlining orion festival. hetfields voice has changed, thats very true. but I wouldnt call it "throat of shit". and in these late concerts he has even impressed me how strong his voice is getting again!

People who insult LaBrie's vocals, and instead choose to defend Metallica are too hypocritcal. All respect to Hetfield when he recorded this masterpiece, but go to a Metallica show nowadays and you get to hear Hetfields throat of shit. You know its Sad but true ;)

Good point my friend. As much as I would argue that Dream Theater are more musically skilled, (which, let's face it...any smart person would agree) there's something to be said about a band who can write a good SONG as opposed to just good music. There are certain bands I'd rather listen to for song writing ability rather than just pure shredding, such as Rush or Metallica to name a few. As much as I love Dream Theater with a passion, their songs don't LAST as much as some other bands.
