This left-of-field country track sounds like it comes straight from the Shel Silverstein songbook, but, in fact, it was written by a good mate of Shel's, Hazel Smith.
Hazel has been a fixture in Nashville for many years...in fact, it was Hazel who coined the phrase "Outlaw Movement" back in the 70s, to describe the attitude and approach of Waylon Jennings and his ilk.
Ray Sawyer recorded this track on his excellent 1977 self-titled LP...
..then, in 1983, he came back to do it all again on his last LP with Dr. Hook, "Let Me Drink From Your Well".
It was released in Australia as the flipside of a Mercury 45,
810-474-7.
The A. side was "I'll Put Angels Around You".
I haven't bothered with uploading the A. side, because there are already plenty of examples on YouTube.
The Dr. Hook star was fading by the time this was released, but, it's still a fine example of their good-time country rock.
