Yet another in Dr. Dog's pantheon of songs about the willfully alone. Yes, life is easy when you're by yourself ("Life for me's just been a walk in the park," as the narrator in "Broken Heart" explains)…but that well runs dry. It's easy to be bitter, it's easy to be cynical, it's easy to be alone…it's hard to open yourself up and to love and to be vulnerable, but that's what life's about. No one speaks for the self-marginalized or the willfully alone like Dr. Dog. If you feel, like I did, that Dr. Dog's songs are about you, maybe you should take a fresh look at how you live your life before it's too late.

Crazy, I was high in Vermont on a hot summer day chilling with my girl jumping off a bridge into a clear stream when I first heard Heart it races, after that I had a new favorite band! Not bad for 48 years old. HAh with my 30 year old girlfriend. Life is good, real good.

+Lee Buchanan This song has made me think of our class too. (Note- the experience of the song felt pretty different with the video.) It's made me think about how we can alienate without notice, nearing without intention, and by habit we can become lonesome with ease. I wouldn't go so far as to say that vanity is our only lonesome, but certainly the song makes me think of Sir Walter and his page. Thinking lonesome reminded me of a passage in Arthur Zajonc's Meditation as Contemplative Inquiry. He begins the book talking about solitude and quotes Rainer Maria Rilke (German poet): "To speak of solitude again, it become always clearer that this is at bottom not something that one can take or leave. We are solitary. We may delude ourselves and act as though this were not so. That is all. But how much better it is to realize that we are so, yes, even to set out by assuming it."In context, Zajonc is making a similar point to Smith in the sections of TMS that we have talked about in class. "…this is at bottom not something one can take or leave. We are solitary." We know we are distinct from other. But like Zajonc is explaining, there is rest and quiet in our solitude. In his explanation, one's solitude is something attended to, as in cultivated or shaped by attention. This morning, I have felt peace in solitude. I see how this isn't far from the classic discussion of the difference between being alone and being lonely, except what I'm enjoying thinking about is what we are up to when we are fluctuating between the two.
