Several others helped purchase Bessie Smith's headstone including NAACP's Juanita Green who was very close to Bessie. The story has been distorted to make Janis Joplin appear as the great white heroine and the only person who cared enough about Bessie to purchase her a headstone. Simply not so. The media intentionally discredited the black people who were involved in that project. The media was biased then as it is now.

The truth is that two women offered to pay for the gravestone: Juanita Green and Janis Joplin. We compromised and each paid half, but it didn't amount to much money, because the makers of the stone did not wish to make a profit on it. Juanita was at the small (sadly farcical) dedication ceremony, but Janis stayed away... she told me that she would be there in spirit, but knew that her real presence would shift the focus away from Bessie, especially since Columbia shamelessly tried to turn this into a PR event.
