I wonder if, when Merle Kilgore & Claude King sat down to write "Wolverton Mountain", that they'd always intended for there to be a female answer version?

As it turns out, that's exactly what happened...and, Jo-Ann Campbell (the "Kookie Little Paradise" girl) went on to have a US Top 40 hit with her version of the female perspective.

Here in Australia, Jo-Ann had to share the airplay and sales with a version by Melbourne girl, Dorothy Baker.

Dorothy was well known in her home state from her appearances on the tv show "In Melbourne Tonight".

Dorothy's version was released in Australia in 1962 on a W&G 45, WG-S-1498.

It charted in Melbourne (# 5) and Perth (# 9).

The backing on this track sounds typical of the W&G sound of the time, so it probably featured the usual suspects like Jack Varney & company.

I know The Hawking Brothers actually played on the album that followed this 45, but, as to whether they're actually on this track is more than I can say.

The flipside was a sweet ballad called "My Achin' Heart", which I've also uploaded to YouTube.

The pictures I've used in the upload are one from the period (from the cover of Dorothy's LP)...and, one taken at an IMT reunion in 2007.

This upload is from the original 45.
