From the legendary concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1973. Respectable was from Don's first album 'Tapestry'.

It couldn't be anything other than Kennedy as it was written only a couple of years after it happened. Poetic licence, lol!!!

This so appropriate for that incident (apparently) involving Joe Senser's wife. The song says it all: almost like it was written for it.

@rhd75 It's just to make people think. Don could not make the song so obvious that it was about Senator Kennedy. People knew it at the time, clear as day. I think the 'dipped in red' analogy is plenty close enough to let people know that it was clearly a car accident, without rubbing his face in it. The goal of the song was to make the situation clear how the wealthy are able to avert justice if they run in the elite circles.

@bobbranson Just curious, but do you have any evidence for this? I could never stand Ted Kennedy, but some of the details do not match. For instance, at Chappaquiddick, the girl who died was inside the car, so the bumper could not have been "dipped in red". Also Kennedy could not "drive away" because the car was upside down in the water.

I saw him sing this in Coventry in the seventies, he said it was about a trial in the US where a someone with a lot of money and influence got off what seemed like a watertight case of killing someone in a hit and run incident, great song

this song is one of the greatest EVER written. it packs more emotion, more message, more everything in two and a half minutes than so many other songs CAN'T manage in four or five. it is an incredible lyrical achievement. added as a favourite and spreading the word!
