I grew up with his American Pie album. It was a classic in my Dad's collection. It was only as a twenty-something I reallyunderstood how amazing a lyricist he is, and how pure I think his grasp on music is. Crossroads is breathtaking every time I hear it, Empty Chairs is still the best representation of heartbreak to me, and The Grave is mind blowing and forever relevant. And Vincent brings me to tears every time I hear it - it is so perfect in its understanding of how to view art - how to really see it.If I ever have kids, my vinyl with American Pie will be played regularly for them. We can dance to American Pie and Everybody Loves Me Baby in the living room and look at Van Gogh pictures in my books as Vincent is playing and when they grow older, hopefully they will see Don McLean in a different light, as I have.

When the people speak about Don McLean, they should speak about his < And I Love You So> , < Vincent> and < American Pie>. But when I listen his name, I should remember immediately his < Empty Chair> and < Crossroads>.I like both of these songs, especially < Crossroads>. When the nights fall, when I am alone as always, it helps me to focus on my solitude and it ask me to face on my heart which I always wish to escape in the daytime.....

You know? Mostly in these days of "believers are ignorant people"... I find it so refreshing to read that you too think of Jesus when you hear those lines... :-)

Wow....an amazingly insightful, witty comment... I bet you play that guitar like a total BADASS! But now I'm a little concerned....how old are you? I was very nervous all through my 27th year...hahaha

You are so insightful. I don't know if Don recognizes the biblical connotations in this song. It probably was more about a journey about decisions. Still song could easily be made into a gosple song.
