Almost time to celebrate this song's centenary. "He's In The Jail House Now" by Toots Davis and Ed Stafford was copyrighted on 11/5/1915. "Ed Stafford and Toots Davis blackface comedians will repeat their song hit of last season 'Hes in de Jail House Now'" -- *Washington Post*, 9/24/1916. Toots Davis was also a tap dancer, and he was credited with inventing the steps called "over the top" and "in the trenches," which he introduced in the mid-1910s. He was still working with Stafford in 1918, singing and dancing, including that song, but a 1919 article said "Marshall and Davis ... who also sing and dance to the African 'KAZOON', find favor when they sing 'He's In the Jail House Now', and play on the slide trombone." By 1920 Davis and Bert Chadwick were singing and dancing together, billing themselves as "The Jail House Boys." As of 1924 Toots was doing choreography for a show starring Josephine Baker. When Toots married Lucille Perry on 9/1/1925 it was reported, "Both will retire from the stage for awhile."
