Eddie's 45 rpm recording of "Mr. Rebel" is what introduced me to surf music other than Pipeline and Wipeout. Has been one of my favorite music genres ever since.

Eddie was a personal friend of mine. About 3 weeks before he died, we listened to this at my house. They did the Dodie Stevens part with no rehearsal which was pretty common in those days. Pretty good considering.

On this day in 1959 {February 28th} Dodie Stevens performed "Pink Shoelaces" on the ABC-TV program 'The Dick Clark Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show'... Twelve days earlier on February 16th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #3 and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100... At the time of her appearance on this 'Sat. Night Beach-Nut Show' she was just 11 days past her 13th birthday... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} and Ms. Stevens celebrated her 67th birthday on February 17th

I have a link to the website with the full concert above. The following quote may explain the timing: "The sound you hear is the sound the audience heard the day of the concert. The bands couldn’t hear each other sing, let alone play. Eddie and the Showmen were a surf band. This may be the only time they ever performed with Dodie. They backed the Fleetwoods and Vic Dana on the same concert. It could have been a deal between Liberty and Dolton Records. I like Dodie and am also a fan of Eddie & S

I'm a big Dodie Stevens fan and it was fun hearing this live clip for the first time. However, Eddie & the Showmen definitely needed some more rehearsals. Their timing was off at various parts and there was several wrong chords. There were even some parts where it sounded like the the band just fell apart and stopped playing, although it could just be that the sound was cutting out in the recording. Still nice to hear Dodie doing her big hit "Pink Shoelaces" which is a personal favorite of mine!
