am I the only one who really doesnt like the solo in this song? don't get me wrong I love dissection, and I think Jon is a pretty good guitarist however the solo just doesnt seem to fit right. I dunno maybe I'm crazy but I'd rather there just not be one at all tbh...

But as you said - and you were right - the classification based on the sound is good if someone wants to find simillar sounding bands, but I still think they would miss the point of it all.

Take the bands I gave as examples, I said they don't sound like each other, but they all have that something of which you can identify them as black metal. I never said that all dark music is black metal, I just said that black metal has an essence that cannot be really explained but lets you know it's black metal indeed.

Ofcourse that is true, but you can still hear that it is indeed black metal. Take my example again, even how evil sounding dark ambient is; it will never be black metal. On the other hand, music is music; you are looking at it like that, and there is nothing wrong with doing that, i am just saying strict musical genre classification is useful when wanting to find similiar sounding artists. Opinions and views will differ, but i hope i made mine clear, that is what im trying to do, not argue.

Jon himself was one of the dissapointed persons by how black metal came to be sounding so one-dimensional. Thousands of bands ripping of the norwegians... What I liked about black metal in the 80's is that bands like Venom, Bathory, Slayer, Destruction, Celtic Frist etc. were all black metal and sounding nothing like each other. Today we also have very few bands unique to each other like Watain, Teitanblood, Ondskapt, Funeral Mist, Dodsengel etc. each having the same dark essence within music.

I understand you, but very dark ambient with tuvan throat singing isn't black metal even if they do occult shit in their free time and use their music to "channel darkness". You see where i am getting? Sure, black metal as an ideology can be used in any kind of music style if you want, but black metal as a musical classification/genre require it to sound somewhat like this. It's easier to find similiar sounding artists that way.

As far as black metal is concerned, any other way then the left hand path is invalid , as so is your argument. It's the one "musical genre" that does not depend on a sound but is a vessel for darkness and the chanelling of it. Any relelvant black metal material is a result of that - thus beeing brought to the level of Art -, though in the first place that would be just black metal setting aside everything else.

Musical genres should be labeled by sound, and not by attitude. Otherwise we'd have a subgenre of black metal (or pick any genre...) for every kind of political/religious/personal view there is.

LOL!! I'm a huge fan of Dimmu Borgir but I can't hear any similarity in that riff and even if it was the same riff it would be Dimmu Borgir who copied it because Sorgens Kammer del II was released in 2005 and this one was released in 1993.
