I read many times that Mark is one of best guitar players. But, you can find many fantastic guitar players, even here on youtube. Original Dire Straits. First 3 albums (Dire Straits, Communique, Making movies) are the best, although mass audience found out them later with MTV. Its a pitty that David left the band (Mark's brother) in middle of recording of Making movies. I think Dire Straits lost a lot with it, as first 3 albums were ingenious. After this, Dire Straits did not made another great album (from my view and ear, only Going Home song was superb in after era). I don't know if Mark and David are back together again, I hope for it. I also hope the original band will bring back together one day and play at least one time again, even on small party. They are legends -> Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, drummer Pick Withers, bass guitar John Illsley. They gave us amazing songs to listen, thank you guys. I hope you will inspire some new band like you.

This is for me their best Live version of song. Pure clean rock. Guitar is lead vocal in band :)I prefer these performance much more than later version with keyboard, just clean rock song, genious melody.

I don't know much about finger picking and strumming playing guitar, as I never played guitar. But I grew up with Dire Straits, I was 14 when I got their Communique album and other one. Mark may not have best voice out there with so many great voices in 80's. But, his guitar sings better than any of these. What I think about their albums and especially this song, is that it is masterpiece. You can see that he grew up with guitar. Its not only his guitar playing, but melody is amazing. You can listen it over and over and never bored again. Their live performance is like studio redording. Pure soul music. This quality seems so simple when you listen, yet its so hard to achieve. Band sounds like one. Everyone plays fantastic in band.
