I have a son, turned 13 only a week ago, keeps saying how he wants to join the military and "serve" - I "served" in the vietnam debacle - two tours, five of my mates dead and two maimed for life. One grandfather and his brother were merchant navy in WW1 the other grandfather and three brothers on the Western Front. My father and his two brothers were in the Western Desert, Italy and Germany in WW2 - I grew up with two grandfathers, no great uncles and one uncle. How do I persuade my son that fighting in wars is meaningless and that the more people (men) who choose not to "serve" will be the only way we can stop war? (if the politicians want to have wars let them go into a locked stadium and fight it out themselves). My Mother never had to meet my bodybag, I pray every day I will never have to meet my son's. I honour every man or woman who serves but I loathe every politician who contributes to the cause of it.
