i was checking to see if anyone understood the song too, but i think i got it. I think its about someone growing old (going blind / retiring) and how even new years eve doesn't mean anything to them anymore.. they've lost someone ( been gone for two days / you could be here on your own) and i think they parallel it to the innocence of children and enjoy everything whether it be cowboys and indians (they dont understand actual war) or new years feeling special. thats my interpretation of it13 years ago
