B-Side of the 1968 number one hit single "Love Child". Included on the album "Let the Sunshine In".

This montage is dedicated to Cindy Birdsong.

About Cindy Birdsong......

Cindy Birdsong's affiliation with Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles ended when Berry Gordy offered her a deal to replace Florence Ballard as a member of The Supremes in 1967. After spending some time as Ballard's stand-in (Ballard and Birdsong superficially resembled one another), Birdsong officially joined Diana Ross & The Supremes, as the group renamed itself immediately prior to her joining, in July 1967.

For her first two and a half years as a Supreme, listeners did not hear Birdsong's voice on most of The Supremes' newest singles. Except for featured backgrounds on several collaborations with The Temptations, live album tracks, and some studio LP tracks, Birdsong and fellow member Mary Wilson did not sing backing vocals on the group's later singles. (Florence's voice was featured on the Reflections album along with Birdsong's, while The Andantes were substituted for Mary and Cindy on many, although not on all, cuts in subsequent Diana Ross & The Supremes albums.) However, Cindy can be heard doing a brief solo during "Let The Sunshine In" on their Farewell performance.

Diana Ross left the Supremes for a solo career in 1970, at which point Jean Terrelll was brought in as the new lead singer. In the new group, both Mary and Cindy's voices were heard more prominently, including the three albums the group recorded with the Four Tops. The same year, Birdsong got married to Charles Hewlett. Birdsong continued to perform with the Supremes until 1971, when she became pregnant with her son, David. Birdsong officially left the Supremes in April 1972, after completing the sessions for the Floy Joy album.

It's because people can't hear Cindy's voice , which annoys Supremes fans.

That's why the name of the 'group' was Diana Ross and the Supremes. Hello? Many didn't like the swith to the upturned volume of the Diana's mic persay, but I didn't mind, cause I really liked her voice.

why are you guys so hard?this is our history. i think most of you are not old enough to know before 1965 we had history but we never read about it.we learned about chris columbus, magelen,to this day i do not know what megellen was.i didnot know that bach came from hungarian gypies.black history is important and yet when i ask my grands.have you read malcolm medgar a. phillip randolph i find we are back in 1963.embrace our history not whether mary could sing or not.make those yougens read

On the live album TCB you can really hear Cindy stand out; Cindy was far and above with a better voice than Mary; had Cindy and Flo been together the group may have been even more special; to be a member of Patti and the Bluebells you had to have been talented; what a shame the Supremes did not go on longer with Ccindy and Jean; there was some talent there but no choreography though; their dancing looked childish; clear Cholly was no longer working with them

What a fabulous voice Diana Ross possesses. She made a jewel out of an ordinary song.

This song takes me back to my 'best Christmas ever!', my brother was the big Supreme fan, & like most younger siblings I followed in his footsteps. He got the "Love Child album" that Xmas, and I got the single (remember the "Close & Play"?). I also got a Creepy Crawler set that year...ahh, good memories. We played this song to death (and the whole album. :-) Thanx for posting.

Excellent song and a perfect production! Diana bites into it like if it was her last meal and the Supremes add plenty of atmosphere with their backgrounds. Both Mary and Cindy can be heard loud and clear specially Cindy.

It's actually fairly easy, for the most part, to tell which songs between 1967-1969 Mary and Cindy are on. The Andantes backgrounds on later Supremes songs often had this cold, colorless sound to them. The backgrounds have a warmer sound to them, less robust, but those familiar with Mary and Cindy's harmonies will immediately recognize them. Beautiful Smokey lyric, as well. "Then" from the Reflections album is another great Smokey song with vocals from Mary and Cindy.

@Motownman100 that she was...she was beautiful and i always thought she fitted in really well. people even said she could not dance the same as mary but cindy looked like she was enjoying every minute. apart from diana, she is my favourite.

I hate how , Cindy Birdsong is not recognized as a "real Supreme" but while she was in the group 1967-1972 , Diana Ross & the Supremes / The Supremes had a total of five number one songs .... In my opinion she's just as much as a Supreme as Diana , Mary , and Florence !!!

I loved this B side of Love Child. My sister use to love this song. I loved it because Mary and Cindy are on this song instead of the Adantes.

Haven't heard this in years, the single belonged to my older sister. Ah the days when the B sides were usually pretty good!
