I'd rather have Devin Townsend's quality of music be what's considered the norm than what is considered "normal" now. I don't see a problem with raising the standard for what the general public will accept as good music. This way, people wouldn't get away with slapping together a haphazard record rife with bad cliches and bland, thoughtless lyrics or use auto-tune to make their sub-par vocals audibly digestible and still sell millions.

I like Devin's music because of the whole multilayered meaning, besides the awesome sounds. His music makes me curious about their meanings which few songs do for me anymore. For whatever reason Devin is a very interesting and intriguing person; a very talented musician indeed.

I think what makes Devin's music indigestible by the public at large is how he's never the same twice. He's constantly evolving, and the public, for the most part, fears change. They need their music to be like religion. It shouldn't challenge them or force them to change; it should tell them what they want to hear. You shouldn't change. Don't think. Don't expand. "Enjoy the tranquility that sameness creates." There's safety in repetition. Devin's music demands you change your tastes and evolve.
