Presented as a both sculptural and sound piece, the work's style is inspired by music of the Caribbean and specifically the 'Soca' genre. The work contains all the familiar aspects of the genre; an upbeat tempo, explicitly sexual lyrical content and autotune in abundance. Subtly weaving reference to contemporary culture, such as mention of the Pop Singer 'Shakira', the work becomes self-referential. Touching on issues of the role of women, especially women of colour, in a modern, western and crucially liberal society, the work follows on from the discourse established by YBA artists Chris Ofili and Tracey Emin.7 years ago
