This is the sixth track from Deep Purple's fourth album, Deep Purple in Rock (1970).

Lineup (Mk II) - Ritchie Blackmore: guitar, Ian Gillan: vocals, Roger Glover: bass, Ian Paice: drums/percussion, and John Lord: keyboards

Lyrics:

You came along for a weekend

But you only stayed for one night

You took off your hair

You pulled out your teeth

Oh I almost died of fright

You'd better do something for your own sake

Yes it's a shame

Ah you know you're a living wreck

You said you were a virgin

Full of promise and mystery

But I know that you

Would bring me down

'Cos everyone calls you big G

You'd better do something for your own sake

Yes it's a shame

Ah you know you're a living wreck

You said you're gonna love me

You said you're gonna set me free

But I knew that you would bring me down

And cause me misery

You'd better do something for your own sake

Yes it's a shame

Ah you know you're a living wreck

Stop your bleeding mind before it's over and done

Listen very closely to the message I've sung

Feel the blood a knockin' when you're finger poppin'

Gonna get a message through, you're gonna--into the fire

Great song! But the last verse of the lyrics here is from "Into The Fire"...another kick ass song.

Timaeus (any relation to Socrates ant Plato?) it is very nice of you to put the lyrics under the videos. This way, we, foreigners (I am greek), who don't know the lyrics by heart, we can sing along. Thank you.

*That moment when you realise you made a big, big mistake!*The drum intro from out in the corridor....magic...and then they're off and running. Up there with the very best in my collection.

Timeless classic! That organ seems to scream at you. First heard it in summer of '72 when I was just 14 years old. Still one of the best songs ever.

Why is there always one dislike! This is a classic! Ian Gillan is at his best here.Jon and Ritchie grinding with Paice and Glover keep a perfect rhythm. Recorded in 69.This was harder sounding than anything I recall at that time.

I really can't understand how they could find the harmony of 5. The guitar, the bass, the drums (oh, it's something), the magical keyboards and, of course, the vocal (dramatical and artistical). Deep. It's really deep...
