I bought this on cha when first released and it cost 40 quid. Still got the receipt. Early 70s I played a similar riff to my mate Ed on my bass and he said " that'll never work in a song. Hmmmm.

apart from the fact that ritchie, while being a genius on guitar, is a complete asshole. I like MKIV so much better than MKII or III

As much as I wanna say Ritchie and Glenn Hughes are fucking fantastic its just not fair on the rest of the band! They are all absolutely phenomenal and all (Including Gillan) make Deep Purple the best band in history!

i love ritichie but i laugh myself sick here. he said in the seattle times "i love zeppelin but sometimes one single criticism is that in the process of running a top band sometimes jimmy's improvisation is a small bit lacking." same deal with ritchie - often, but not always. both burn and lay down stay down were in 1974 out at the 'edge' of his ability and in both of these tunes he chickens out and plays crap.
