You can spot a Tony Macaulay song and production a mile off. Clean, sharp instrumentation and strings. And an oboe. Funny how the oboe features so frequently in the Macaulay songs that David Soul recorded. Mike Batt is another writer-producer who favours the oboe. The Drifters or Johnny Johnson and The Bandwagon could also have credibly recorded this song.

The strings on this, played on vinyl, amplified by my tech and outputted through the 989 speakers (substantially inspired by the brilliant and humble genius Peter Walker) sounded sublime like no other. The CD master has none of the sheen, shimmer and delicacy in the strings that the vinyl had in spades -- they are like a dance in the air on vinyl, and the total inability to tell their sound is coming from the speakers as the notes swell and swerve in a mesmerizing sonic mirage was arresting like nothing quite else. Oh man, I didn't think strings could sound so complex and beautiful on an audio rig (I've heard them live and unamplified) but I was wrong about that.
