@ doc2skate: Michael Brecker would be the "Dizzy" Gillespie of saxophone, with regards to throat swelling while playing. He had throat surgery for a herniated larynx around '73, and switched to EWI (wind-driven MIDI controller) for a time, and was careful about "over-blowing" after the surgery.

If you ever saw Sanborn in concert, you would've noticed his throat swelled when playing the say. Kind of similar to the way dizzy Gillespie's cheeks swelled when playing the trumpet. Guess that had something to do with the breathing while playing at the same time. Both held a note an incredibly long time.
