He was definitely sick you can tell by the straining in his voice. Great performance all in all he just tried really hard to modify it so he could hit the notes and put less strain on his voice.

David is human just like you and me. If he was fighting sickness, that's gives me more reason to appreciate him in that he flew all that way to perform. Flying is hard on the body-diesel fumes, bad air, unusual air pressure- none of which would help a singer's vocal chords. David Phelps is a wonderful blessing-give him a break. And as far as the Gaither Vocal Band, they have been in existence since 80s. Bill Gaither has been a genius at replacing ones that needed to leave. Nothing lasts for

I'd have to disagree to the statement below claiming that he has "lost power" he still has it I know it's just he has picked up some bad vocal habits (singing too breathy, singing nasal with a high larynx, splatting out vowels instead of rounding them out and keeping them pure) but I still love david to death and I hope he doesn't really hurt himself continuing to abuse his voice. But I think once he picks back up his good habits then the big voice we all know and love will be back :)

@dadadadasad I think David lost some power, that's why that note wasn't too convincing

@suzare - definitely, good call on the illness. Listen to almost any other version of this on youtube, and you can tell he was way below par that night. Not only is he singing 1/2 step lower than usual, as one other person commented, but he only holds that last note for about 9 seconds, instead of 14. You can hear him break off the note because he can tell it's about to get away from him.

Gaither Vocal Band came to Tulsa right after this...and only about 6 people performed. None of the Gaither Vocal Band was there. It was a disappointment. FIrst Gaither Vocal Band concert I'd ever been able to go to. Hope they can come back to Tulsa and this time bring the REAL members of the crew..and not use some substitutes. Those three guys sitting there were there..as was the black woman. No one else, but Bill.

Nice video - thanks for posting! I have listened to David Phelps enough to say that he sounds like maybe he was sick. I read of him having pneumonia on one of the tours and still performing and I can hear it in his voice that he has some kind of chest illness. Can you imagine singing this well when you were sick? He's a superstar for God.
