*Modern parables.* When I was a boy I found this song terribly sad because the boy in it is treated badly and dies at the end. I wished that he'd freed himself and helped in the destruction of the village and its awful people. The song is about a boy from the wild captured by the people of the village and imprisoned by them. Bowie said of this song from early in his recording career, "It was about the disassociated, the ones who feel as though they're left outside, which was how I felt about me. I always felt I was on the edge of events, the fringe of things, and left out. A lot of my characters in those early years seem to revolve around that feeling."The wild-eyed boy from the mountain Freecloud is anybody who does nothing more terrible than try to live out of his or her nature. Such people do two dangerous things: they place themselves outside of society, and they invite punishment from society, which values conformity and creed over nature and freedom. Nature is something to be tamed, broken or annihilated, not explored. That includes one's inner nature. So, the boy, tied and imprisoned by the villagers who live at the foot of the mountain, awaits his judgment. As night slips over the land, he looks up and cries out, "It's so hard for us to really be. You'll lose me, though I'm always really free."Then the song turns. Nature wakes up. The mountain sees what the villagers did to the boy. The mountain rains destruction onto the settlement. Nature's vengeance does not discriminate or play to human notions of fairness: the boy is destroyed along with the villagers and all of their works. Whatever we intend, we are never separate from nature. Nature, being both our creator and our executioner, is much bigger than us. We forget that at our peril. We lose so much when we negatively judge those who show us through their being that nature is part of who we are, not something outside of us. It's still a sad song. But, in a different way to me now."Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud"by David BowieStudio version appears on the album *Space Oddity* (1969)This live recording was created around that time.Solemn facedThe village settles downUndetected by the starsAnd the hangman plays the mandolin before he goes to sleepAnd the last thing on his mindIs the Wild Eyed Boy imprisoned'Neath the covered wooden shaftFolds the ropeInto its bagBlows his pipe of smoldersBlankets smoke into the roomAnd the day will end for someAs the night begins for oneStaring through the message in his eyesLies a solitary sonFrom the mountain called FreecloudWhere the eagle dare not flyAnd the patience in his sighGives no indicationFor the townsmen to decideSo the village Dreadful yawnsPronouncing gross diversionAs the label for the dogOh "It's the madness in his eyes"As he breaks the night to cry:"It's really MeReally YouAnd really MeIt's so hard for us to really beReally YouAnd really MeYou'll lose me though I'm always really free"And the mountain moved its eyesTo the world of realizeWhere the snow had saved a placeFor the Wild Eyed Boyfrom FreecloudAnd the village Dreadful criedAs the rope began to riseFor the smile stayed on the faceOf the Wild Eyed Boy from FreecloudAnd the women once proudClutched the heart of the crowdAs the boulders smashed down from the mountain's handAnd the Magic in the stareOf the Wild Eyed Boy said"Stop, Freecloud They won't think to cut me down"But the cottages fellLike a playing card hellAnd the tears on the faceOf the Wise BoyCame tumbling downTo the rumbling groundAnd the missionary mystic of peace/loveStumbled back to cry among the cloudsKicking back the pebblesFrom the Freecloud mountain track.

I haven't heard this version of this song since about 1974. my best school friend of my teens had the original single, and I heard this when I had never heard the album version. It sounds just as great as it did then, and much more powerful than the album version. It's as good as hit acoustic version of "All the Young Dudes" - also brilliant

This is "the Paul Buckmaster version", found also in the Space Oddity special edition published couple of years ago. Definitely the one to be played
