a great song....I much prefer Robyn Hitchcock's cover to this, however...Bowie is overly dramatic and histrionic on this, I think...I have always liked Bowie though..."I`ve been to Sugar Town, I`ve shook the sugar down"

The air is getting hotterThere’s a rumbling in the skiesI’ve been wading through the high muddy waterWith the heat rising in my eyesEvery day your memory grows dimmerIt doesn’t haunt me like it did beforeI’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere*Trying to get to heaven* before they close the doorWhen I was in MissouriThey would not let me beI had to leave there in a hurryI only saw what they let me seeYou broke a heart that loved youNow you can seal up the book and not write anymoreI’ve been walking that lonesome valleyTrying to get to heaven before they close the doorPeople on the platformsWaiting for the trainsI can hear their hearts a-beatin’Like pendulums swinging on chainsI tried to give you everythingThat your heart was longing forI’m just going down the road feeling badTrying to get to heaven before they close the doorI’m going down the riverDown to New OrleansThey tell me everything is gonna be all rightBut I don’t know what “all right” even meansI was riding in a buggy with Miss Mary-JaneMiss Mary-Jane got a house in BaltimoreI been all around the world, boysNow I’m trying to get to heaven before they close the doorGonna sleep down in the parlorAnd relive my dreamsI’ll close my eyes and I wonderIf everything is as hollow as it seemsSome trains don't pull no gamblersNo midnight ramblers like they did beforeI been to Sugar Town, I shook the sugar downNow I’m trying to get to heaven before they close the door© 1997 by Special Rider Music

I wans painted a picture from a door , a raven wanted to come out . There was a little chain on the door, the door was heavy. Also there was a man 's face at the door. Not like the door from heaven but the door from hell it seems. That 's what i said i want to go to hell and not to heaven, because i love muziek and dancing and other stuff. And heaven is to quited there is a peace you have a own garten and they feel wonderful . Like in the clib from the stars

Bruce Springsteen's "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City" is another good example

I love Bowie, but in this case I like Dylans original much better. Bowie acts the song rather than singing it ....

So true! Sorry Mick, but Let's Spend the Night Together by B*O*W*I*E is way hotter - & I'm a big Stones fan me-self.

I think Bowie did a great cover (cept he left out the Missouri verse lol )

This is poorly mixed I feel....can see why he didn't release it...lacks the yearning and desperation of dylan's version - the broken voiced poet staring into the abyss. I love Bowie but on this occasion he falls short.

I see a lot of criticism in the comments but I couldn't disagree more. A lot of people tend to think that original artists versions are always the best but in Bowie's case, this is not true. I listened to the originals of the Beatles Mother, Across the Universe and Dylan's Trying to Get To Heaven to name a few. I then listened to Bowie's covers of these songs and I find Bowie's to be much more exciting. He puts so much into his music, others cannot compare. Even the originals.
