Knock on Wood (Eddie Floyd / Steve Cropper)

From the album "David Live"

Lyrics:

I don't want to lose the good thing that I've got

If I do, I will surely, I will lose a lot

For your love is better than any other love I've known

It's like thunder, lightning

The way you love me is frightening

I better knock on wood

Baby

I got superstitious about you, but I can't take a chance

You got me spinning, baby, spinning in a trance

But your love is better than any other love I've known

It's like thunder, lightning

The way you love me is frightening

You better knock on wood

Yeah

It's no secret, but that woman fills my lovin' cup

Thus she sees, so ready, that I get enough

And her love is better than any other love I've known

It's like thunder

It's like lightning

The way you love me is frightening

I better knock on wood

Baby

Oh yeah,

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) Yes, I better

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) Oh, knock on wood

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) You know I would, would

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) It's no secret

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) No, oh, better

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) Hangin' above me

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) I can't leave her

(Yes you better knock, knock, knock on wood) Oh no, baby

Knock on wood, Woo!!

This is how Bowie sounded in that era and during that US tour, edgy with grunt guitar work. I find, because he only sang it a few times and did not record it in the studio, to be less refined, as if it needed some more rehearsing to nail the details. Yes, the drumwork is excellent, but the song has a few unfilled sound spots in it, a few awkward sounding breaks, and Bowie sings the song not having decided yet where to put some nuances, aggression and other things that he does with his voice. Now, as a profound Bowie fan I have to defend him; few rock artists have the size of port folio that Bowie has, few come even close to his body of works. People that have done that much have some work that they did not spend a lot of time on. If you googled the song (I didn't), you'd probably find that 500 artists covered this song, I enjoy hearing it in Bowie's voice with his band in that......."panick in detroit" sound.

As I remember it, the B-side ( remember them ) of the 7inch ( and them ) was the best version he ever did of "Panic in Detroit" - annoyingly not on the David Live recording. But if you can find it - it's the song at it's very very best. I think Bowie recorded 'Panic', a few times in the studio, but never quite got the greatness out of it - but he did on that David Live recording - even if it didn't make the album. God it's good.

this song was a big hit for Amii Stewart, cant see why, Bowie's version leaves for dead.

I'm not sure about anybody else, but I really don't like any other version of this song that much. Just so much of the feeling that Bowie puts into it is missing from a lot of covers and in some ways the original too

I'm the first to hate this?!! I love Bowie but this song is out of his element. Sorry

Personally I think they have messed this up. Sounds like a school boy band playing it to me. Eddie Floyd's version was far more considered. What was the goal here? Were they trying to turn into something like a Status Quo song?
