This album was released around the time Bazan renounced his faith. Most of the songs on Curse Your Branches in some way chronicle his doubts and struggles. Listen to it again and I'm sure you'll catch on

Anyone know how the beardy guitarist is getting those whale-like, pedal steel-style 'whines' at the start of the track and throughout? Is it a pedal or is the keyboard player?

@XrandomXemoXkidX I've seen him 3 times. About to go a fourth. Two of those times it was just him alone with a guitar in a small venue with maybe 100 people. The third time was at a bigger venue with the band and a ton of people were there. I think seeing him by himself was probably the most intimate, honest, and best performance I have ever experienced. Him with the band was a whole other trip. If you ever get a chance definitely go. No other shows have hit me as hard as his.
