Charted at #28 on Billboard Hot 100 in July 1957. Although this was his only Billboard charting single, Dave became more famous as a comedian under the name "Brother Dave Gardner". According to Billboard, this is the original version of the song. It also charted at #7 for Don Rondo on Billboard Hot 100 in July 1957 (which I've also posted). Even more charting versions of this song: #18 for Owen Bradley in July 1957, #9 for Bill Black's Combo in March 1960 (#1 R&B, #50 UK) and #5 for Sonny James on the Country chart in 1972.

Written by Charles 'Red' Matthews & Gladys Reinhart.

B-side is "Fat Charlie".

one of the first songs I became aware of in the amazing 50's. And by far the best version, BY FAR!!! 50's will always be my favorite decade music wise. This was just one of countless treasures released. Platters, Elvis, Jack Scott, Ruth Brown, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Ivory Joe Hunter, Carl Perkins, Big Joe Turner, Smiley Lewis, the list goes on and on and on and

Dave had a long running gig at the Biltmore Lounge in Atlanta. George in the mid 60s. Dave rolled thru life with steam and amusement. He was an interesting and funny guy.Dave lived on the road and in the clubs that made up America during the Kennedy-Johnson years. A stand up originator and trooper RIP

Brother Dave Gardner, a native of Tennessee, gave this song a bluesy jazzy New Orleans style packed with a punchy organ, whereas Massachusetts' Don Rondo's version had not only the organ but had an electric guitar instead of the Dixieland style horns of Gardner's. RIP Brother Dave Gardner and Don Rondo. Also, if someone has Sonny James' 1972 version with a rocking fuzz-tone guitar to go along with his smooth vocals and acoustic guitar picking expertise, I hope someone can post it.

Thanks for this! I had the pleasure of meeting Brother Dave a few years before his death. I was working a hole in the wall comedy club in Houston, Texas and he came in one night. Brother Dave paved the way for the current crop of "Southern" comics -- Foxworthy, Ron White, Bill Engvall, et al.

A Canadian TV children's show from the '80's called "You Can't Do That on Television". "Ross Ewage" was their station manager, as played by Les Lye. Your supervisor sounds like he was a lot of fun.

what does YCDTOT stand for? no I got the name from my old supervisor at the Federal Government. he used to put funny names on his deskplate and change them every day. Ross Ewage was one of them, along with P. Donda Floor , Abner Mality, and Mahatma Coat. there were other names but I don't remember them.

no, my supervisor at work used to make silly desk nameplates like "Holden Magroin" "Abner Mality" "P. Don Dafloor" and "Mahatma Coat". "Ross Ewage" was another one of them.

The answer is in the description under the video. Is your username a reference to Les Lye's stage manager character on YCDTOT?

the late Don Rondo had an almost identical version of this song around the same time. does anyone know which one charted higher...Dave Gardner or Don Rondo?
