Dave Dudley's tribute to a racer friend (Possibly Glenn "Fireball" Roberts, though Roberts' trademark number was 22). The only visual in the video is the lyrics to the song. Feel free to sing along.

Im looking at pictures on different sites and Fireball ran several different #'s. The #22 being the most famous

Im not sure he's talking about the car #. Fireball wrecked on Lap #7 and rolled the car. Im sure the 7 has something to do with Fireballs bad luck.

The confusion over the "7" is probably not so much that Fireball Roberts ran the number 22 on his car, but that in a game of craps, a roll of 7 is the losing roll of the dice after the player has been rolling the dice. In this case, Fireball rolled a 7 and he won. I think a lot of license was taken to make the song work, but it was definitely a tribute to a great racer that will live on in our memories.

I race Super Vees - not in the same class as NASCAR I know but it's still a dangerous sport. My car is #7 and my nickname is 'Fireball' oh and do you think you could put this song to some old NASCAR clips?

I interviewed Dave back in the 80s while working as a country dj at WTTM in Trenton. Davd told me that the song was indeed about Glenn "Fireball" Roberts. I'm not sure if Dave wrote it but I believe he did not. As far as facts are concerned, there might have been some poetic license involved of course. Somehow "Fireball Rolled A 22" wouldn't be that easy to sing!

A friend of mine has the #12 Coke Machine Monte Carlo full street legal replica, I also talked to a guy the other day that has the #22 FireBall Roberts Pontiac. He sure could drive a car. I hadn't heard this song in a while.

@LittleJimmySouthern Yeah I've pondered the same thing. Like you said, great song, just wonder who it was really about. Since Dave died in 2003 I guess none of us will ever know.

oh i don't mind tragic songs...if they're sung right. Dave Dudley, George Jones, Red Sovine are the top three acts who can pull off tragic songs. i've always disliked cheery, happy songs but I tolerate them if they're sung by singers I enjoy listening to. i don't know, tragedy or sad times just lend themselves better to country music, which I'm a fan of. I couldn't take being chipper and all smiles and bubbly...something about that sort of demeanor seems unreal to me.

I used to race Super Vees on quarter mile dirt ovals; that was dangerous in and of itself- Super Vees are similar to midgets but use Volkswagen engines.

Fireball Roberts was fatally injured from burns suffered in an early crash in the 1964 World 600 at Charlotte, in what was supposed to be Fireball's last race before his retirement

Great tribute to Fireball Roberts, one of the great grand-daddies of stock car racing.
