Mary Mareno- He was a good looking guy, and the image they portrayed was wholesome to say the least, and were popularly tagged as 'the best looking British group'! I think to a degree that was held against them. They were certainly not rebels!

There's been much talk about Dave Clark's Botox denials. I was a big Dave Clark Five fan (I had all their American albums, and several foreign labels, including a Japanese one I purchased in Japan in 1969). Never saw the band in concert, but I did see his musical, "Time" in London in October, 1986; (Not great, but it was OK!). I even bought the album after the show. What I recall about the promo material for this musical was a photo of Dave in the brochure with Sir Lawrence Olivier, and I remember (And, I do still have it packed away somewhere in my house,) is that Dave had quite a few wrinkles back then for a man in his forties. In fact, my wife and I waited until the very last moment before entering the theatre on the Tottenham Court Road, hoping Dave would show up. I recall speaking with the manager about the possibility of seeing Dave. He informed us that he rarely showed up in recent times, and besides, "Why would you want to meet him, he's got so many wrinkles!" Wow! Well, you know Dave was a bit of a sun worshipper, so it's only natural for a fair skinned Englishman to have an aging problem 'facially' when one spends so much time in the sun, boating, skiing, and so forth! My impression is that Dave Clark has a tremendous ego. Have you ever read the liner notes on Epic albums such as "Try Too Hard" "Satisfied With You" and "Five by Five" (I no longer have them, but they're available on Ebay) for example? If one did not know any better they'd have to conclude that it was Dave who sang lead, and not Mike Smith! Of course this was in the day before Youtube. Perhaps Dave Clark was banking on the probability that all videos of the group on stage would have faded away, and having only the albums for information future generations would conclude that Dave Clark did it all! I wish Lenny Davidson would risk it all, and publish an extensive biography of the group!
