The Darwin Song Project Concert

Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury March 19th

Kingdom Come

written by Mark Erelli, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane

performed by Mark Erelli, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane, Karine Polwart, Emily Smith

In March 2009 eight folk singer/songwriters gathered together for a week long songwriting residential in rural Shropshire to create songs that had a relevance and resonance with Charles Darwin.

The eight artists were Chris Wood, Karine Polwart, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane, Krista Detor, Emily Smith, Mark Erelli and Jez Lowe.

The whole concert was recorded for a CD and DVD release, and the 8 musicians reconvened at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival in August 2009, to once again perform the 19 songs that were written during the week.

The wasp she lays an egg

Neath a caterpillars skin

It hatches and the larva grows

Feasting from within

It kills the host then off it goes

To sting another one

Seems to me theres too much misery to believe in Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Seems to me theres too much misery to believe in Kingdom Come

Ive a secret guaranteed

To make the theologians squirm

All it takes is time to make a man

From the lowliest of worms

We are not the pinnacle

Nobodys chosen ones

Can the minds of men be trusted with such things as Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Can the minds of men be trusted with such things as Kingdom Come

Once I had a daughter

She died before her time

I sponged her fevered brow

And cursed her bilious decline

I feel her like a phantom limb

Pins and needles numb

Friend I cannot comprehend what makes you cling to Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Friend I cannot comprehend what makes you cling to Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Seems to me theres too much misery

Can the minds of men be trusted

I cannot comprehend what makes you cling to Kingdom Come

Ive known communion in conviction

And the loneliness of doubt

Does the master mark the sparrows fall

Or just let it all play out

If only for your sake my love

I wish I could succumb

Bridge the void and join for eternity in your Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Bridge the void and join for eternity in your Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Bridge the void and join for eternity in your Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Seems to me theres too much misery to believe in Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come, Kingdom Come

Can the minds of men be trusted with such things as Kingdom Come

This is such a great song and Mark Erelli is such a talent! I first heard this in Edinburgh - IN A RECORD SHOP. Remember those? A dedicated folk record shop at that! This is probably one of the perfect songs as the concept and execution are stunning.
