Blind Willie Johnson's slide masterpiece...the guitar is a National Black Rust (B-Series) Duolian.

Check out my website for more Delta Blues lessons and discussion: www.deltabluesguy.blogspot.ca

Here's a link to the original recording (best slide recording ever! IMHO...)

Thanks for all the comments! I appreciate it. I'll check out all the various stuff you've outlined. Ry's awesome, from what I've heard...though I haven't really delved into his stuff too much, unfortunately. IMHO, Blind Willie's level of musicianship was on the level of Coltrane, Stravinsky, and the like. Beyond JUST blues, beyond JUST r&b gospel...his shit was that incredibly rare variety that completely transcended any kind of silly label. Glad you liked the vid, thanks!

Lastly, Did you ever hear of Chris Whitley? He passed in 2005 from lung cancer. Someone once told his road manager, tell that boy he plays like 3 men. Give Chris a listen I think you'd like him. His main guitar was a 1930 Triolian. I have a friend in Japan who have spent the last 6 six years studying Chris's work. He does it better than anyone. He's know the whole Whitley family.

Oh, Ry Cooder plays it in an Open C, gives it a darker sound.

Blah, checkout Catfish Keith. He's a great person, awesome blues player. He is in the film National : A Guitar story. You can get it on YT. Another great guy int the movie is Doug McLeod. Man, he's great and has some wonderful stories to tell. You have to see it!

The most interesting version I've ever heard is by Marc Ribot, Tom Waits' main guitarist. It's great!

You should check out Michael Messer forum and become a member, it's free. Michael has played with many legends. He'd love to have you on the forums.

Bro you pretty much nailed it and the nuances as well. Do you also play "God Moves On The Water"? Another great by BWJ.

Another very interesting rendition is by Catfish Keith, played on a 1990 Tricone tuned down to Bb. But you're awesome. IMO Ry Cooder is the best slide player of my era, and remains so. I'm sure you have his rare recording on Dark Was The Night. He also performs it at the end of the film Paris, Texas. Actually the entire sound track is based on Dark was the night.

Love you rendition of Dark Was The Night. Excellent! Love your Duolin. I use a National Custom made Tricone that Don Young built for me. This is my favorite piece of music. I've bookmarked your website as well.

Vestapol in D. I would think that's the tuning that Blind Willie used originally, but I'm not totally sure!
