I find it strange Elvis Presley never recorded this great song. It would suit his voice and style perfectly.

This song is a fine synthesis of country music and soul. It's little wonder it's been recorded by so many artists from so many different genres.

Thanks for posting this, but please list correct info. In the intro, Penn says he co-wrote this with Chips Moman. He also wrote songs with the gentleman playing piano and singing harmony, Spooner Oldham, but this ain't one of 'em. :-)

James Carr had an amazing voice but it is nice to hear Dan Penn sing it and Spooner Oldham is always terrific. They age with such grace!

There are so many great versions of this song, James Carr, The Commitments, Percy Sledge, Ry Cooder are just few that come to mind - no matter who does it though it's always good to hear the songwriter do his own work. Dan Penn wrote this piece - here's his version - enjoy#danpenn #spooneroldham #thedarksideofthestreet #classic #music

Everyone talks about James Carr's version, but for me there's only Percy Sledge - and this.

There are so many wonderful versions of this song. I suppose knowing he wrote the song colors my opinion, but there is a tender, understated quality to the way he sings this that I find quite endearing. I had no idea he was such a great performer until recently. So fine.

It's from a dutch radioshow called 2 meter sessies. A bit like unplugged, but without an audience.

Don't call it a James Carr classic when the man in the video wrote the song! I prefer Dan Penn singing it, anyway.

Written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman, not Spooner Oldham.
