Dan was so attuned to human frailty and emotion and brilliantly captured that in his song Windows and Walls.

I write and record songs. I couldn't perform this one without losing it halfway through... Sad...

A familiar scene for too many, I'm afraid....and not just the elderly.

jumpinjakeflash1, I know how you feel. I left a 46 year abusive marriage 18 months ago. Along with battling PTSD and depression, I too am lonely, I have children, but the one who wants to be with me lives too far away, and the one who lives in the same town, sets standards for me to meet before he will spend any time with me (just like his father). So my windows and walls are my daily viewpoint. It is unbelievably disheartening, and so hard after being isolated to learn how to make friends again.

I used to listen to this song as a kid. Never had any idea it would be my biography someday. Hate to say it, but this is my life pretty much all the time. Got married as a young man to the love of my life and lived 23 years in bliss; I was faithful to her always. A few years ago, she decided she wanted to move on and divorced me. Now she's gone. All I ever knew how to do was be a husband and father. Kids are grown now and I've tried but I cannot move myself to date anyone again. Too shy now. I went to one of those dating meetings at a restaurant, but just felt stupid and did not go in. It's very hard to admit that, but this song is like truth serum. Damn it, Dan...nothing wrong with living alone, but loneliness feels so dark and hopeless. I started drinking after she left, and rarely was sober for years. But since I quit drinking, I can't escape the loneliness. I loved fixing stuff for her, talking to her about her day, holding her on the couch watching tv. In the early years, she would ask me if I would still love her when she gets old and becomes a grandma, and I would say, yeah. way past then. way past then.

Are you kidding me? Of course it's depressing! It's also the sad truth for the end of many people's lives! Dan was a tremendous songwriter who wrote many joyous songs. Before you make such a rude statement perhaps you should listen to his entire body of work and then amend your criticism.

tom, It is about recognizing it exists and instead of burying ourselves in "other" concerns hoping it will work itself out actively try and do something to stem the tide. An example would be I saw a man walking on the shore and every so often he would stop pick up a starfish and throw it into the ocean. I asked him why he did it because it wouldn't change the world and he threw the next one and turned to me and said, "It matters to that one."

Ignoring a problem because it's too "sad" for you doesn't make it go away. It means that societal problems are never resolved. How great it is that we have music as an outlet to consider these things!
