I read somewhere that Dan Fogelberg had to have surgery on his adnoids back in the early-mid 80's and it cost him the higher range of his vocals. The bass player in Dan's band (I think his name was Jim Photoglo) actually sang the high parts when Dan performed "the Power Of Gold." I think Dan was a pretty heavy smoker, too. But boy, his voice from "Home Free" through "The Innocent Age" was like buttah.

Dan was one of a kind, and a class act all the way. His voice was shot in this song, maybe a sore throat/cold, or maybe from long touring, I don't know. But he was still great, and one of the most underrated songwriters and musicians around.

Growing up at that time seem easy now but that song helped me out of times I didn't know what and I wanted it right then.Just glad he was there to help me out miss his music,cause he was one of us looking for a way to get by and sharing what worked for him.Like John Lennon did.
