I agree that this is nothing like Diru (and it annoys me to no end when people compare everyone to them), but saying they weren't a breakthrough band is just... wrong. Dir en Grey was (and still is) HUGE in Japan. They changed visual kei when they arrived, adding more of a metal edge to the mix. Look at VK before their first couple albums (1999, 2001) and look at what VK bands ended up being like after. Saying they weren't breakthrough says they didn't influence anything, and that's dead wrong.
