Curtis Mayfield did not die from drugs and singing about drugs covered a small part of his singing career. He was mostly gospel, R&B, and inspirational. His death was triggered by getting hit in the head from lightning striking his equipment at Wingate Field in Brooklyn, NY in 1990. He became a paraplegic and died December 26, 1999,
